I moved into Winsham in 2017 as it stood out as a place of great community spirit. It has not disappointed. My only, tenuous, connection with the area is that my grandfather was born in Budleigh Salterton. After (too) many years working in finance and IT I finally retired in late 2019 and so I can spend more time helping to further improve our already excellent village. A strong council supported by the residents will be able to make positive changes; let’s all work together for a brighter future.

I am Dutch born (1951) and bred, married to an English wife (Juliet) and with three children, now all grown up. We have lived in the UK since 1990, having been in Kenya for five years before then. From 1991-2013 I worked as a botanist for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, writing about African wild plants and often doing fieldwork, mostly in Madagascar and East Africa.
We came to Winsham parish in 2014, living at Leigh and loving the area. I still do botanical projects, writing flora treatments for Gabon, the Congo and Malaysia, and producing books on trees; working our garden, walking the hills, building models and reading about history.

Apart from 6 years in my late 20s I have lived in Winsham all my life.  My family have been here for several generations.  I attended the village school, moving on to Holyrood and then completed an apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering.  I worked in the maintenance department of Clarks Shoes in Ilminster for 24 years and for the last 16 years have been an Electrical Engineer at Numatic International, famous for the red Henry vacuum cleaner.  Over the years I have been involved in many village activities and I was a Parish Councillor for several years in the 1990s.  Now our children have grown up and I am reducing work commitments I feel I am in a position to give more of my time to the village that my family and I are proud to call home.
